Roseville, U.S.A.

The Warm Rails

Traveling by train is like watching a film. The views outside transition steadily, but in a deliberate, rhythmic pace. New elements are gradually introduced, foreshadowing the scene change, and the big reveals only show up when they are appropriately dramatic. It's slow, and it's sleepy, and everything is gorgeous.

I did not, however, expect train food to be so completely inedible. Do people get scurvy on long train rides? I would kill for an apple about now.

  1. I could have brought you a delicious home-packed lunch before you left, but you told me you didn't want me to see you off at the train station. I may not be much of a chef, but I certainly could have provided an apple!!

I love your description of the view out the window. It reminds me of the trip I took with my mom and sister on the train when I was 7. What a glorious--and hopefully warm--way to see the country.

    Get some good food soon!!

  2. You'll be happy to know that I had a healthy breakfast this morning of cold-cuts, unnameable cheese, prunes, kiwi, salty flatbread, cottage cheese and pickled herring in a thai chili sauce.

The color palette was almost as strange as the flavor palette.

  3. As strange as this breakfast sounds, you probably enjoyed it--especially in comparison to what you got on the train. I assume you are safe and sound in Rejekvik (or however you spell that place!). Good thing you called me yesterday! I anxiously await your first pictures of Iceland--and pray you are not freezing!

  5. Definitely! That shot shows the most popular part of town, but I think there's some other cool stuff too. Like a mailbox or something.
